To mark the start of UK Black History Month, Smithsonian Channel commissioned the remarkable story of James Meredith - the first black man to enrol at the University of Mississippi in America’s segregated South and the one of the most influential, controversial, and forgotten icons of the Civil Rights era. His complete story had never been told in a documentary, largely because he has refused to grant access, but Smithsonian Channel secured unprecedented access to his remarkable life. Without a doubt, the highlight of the campaign was securing a sit-down interview in the ipaper with 87-year-old Meredith and an ITV news interview with Producer and Director, Sol.B River.
